Getting married and buying your first home are arguably two of the most monumental, exciting, and (sometimes) stressful milestones in life. Even moreso when done consecutively or simultaneously! The good news is, there are a ton of similarities between planning and executing a wedding and buying your first home. Today we’ve invited a past lovely bride, Jordan, to tell us all about how to put those wedding planning skills and lessons learned to use in your home buying adventures.
There are a few people you’ll need to hire to help you through the home buying process, including a real estate agent, mortgage banker, and insurance agent. And just like wedding vendors, the best professionals will recommend each other!
Determine your price point and stick to it. To determine how much house you can comfortably buy, first speak with a mortgage banker about what you can get qualified for. Don’t forget that just because you can get approved for a certain amount doesn’t mean you’ll be comfortable with the monthly payment. Just like you did before you began wedding planning, sit down with your significant other and discuss your home buying budget and where your comfort zone is for your monthly mortgage payment.

You didn’t start wedding planning 3 weeks before the big day (or if you did more power to ya)! The sooner you can start making home buying plans the better. You may determine after speaking with your team that you want to save a little more money or improve your credit score before buying and those things can take time. If you are working against a current rental lease, it is better to start the process sooner rather than later to be sure you don’t run out of time.
Just like your wedding is YOUR big day, this is going to be YOUR new home. Buy a home that you and your significant other love and don’t let the opinions of others get you down.
